Shop my Utility Room
HI everyone! How was your summer? Let’s just say summer break kicked my bootie with the kids home all summer long. It was, of course, awesome getting to hang with them all summer long, but I long for routine. I cannot believe Fall is right around the corner. Bring on cozy cardigans, hot coffee and pumpkin EVERYTHING! So with the seasons changing, I always get the itch to change up something around our home. I recently talked my hubbie into letting me add blue shibori wallpaper in our utility room. Our utility room is a multi-purpose room with my office space, kids’ cubbies and more in the room. It got me thinking about about some simple ideas to change up the feel of any room and refresh any space in your home…Let’s get started:

4 Simple Ways to Refresh any Space in your Home
- New Draperies: And I will preface this with they don’t have to be custom! We have both custom and store bought in our home and I love both. We have white custom linen panels in the main areas of our home. We did custom for our large windows and we added black out lining to them. We do have these PotteryBarn linen panels in other areas of the house and they are great and come in a wide variety of colors. Maybe you have wood blinds and could take those down and add draperies instead? My parents recently added cream panels to their windows and it made the biggest difference in their living area. Their windows look much taller now and the new draperies give an upscale feel to the space. We did replace the window treatment in my newly updated utility room with a custom faux roman shade because once the wallpaper went up, I knew the existing window treatment was not going to work. I love it! My interior designer sourced some fabric options for me and then I chose my favorite, which was a soft grey linen with a fun blue trim. I will repurpose the old window treatment fabric and have it made into pillows or a new window treatment for our new lake house we are building.
- Fresh/Faux Flowers and Greenery: I wouldn’t say I have much of a green thumb so I am not against adding some nice faux flowers or faux plants to help refresh any space in your home. Obviously, the easiest and most affoardnale option is to run to your grocery store or Trader Joe’s and pick up some fresh blooms or a potted orchid. I love the color and texture fresh flowers add in my kitchen and all over my house, really. But, I hate when they die, so I love these faux white roses as an option that will stay pretty year round. I have faux white roses that are very similar and move them around my home all of the time. I recently added this large faux fiddle leaf fig to our living area and it instantly felt like a different space. The tree adds some coziness with its size and plenty of interest to my white walls (walls are painted SW Natural Choice). The fig tree is a great size and the price is so good for how large it is. I also have this affordable faux snake plant in my master bath. It feels and looks totally real! Again, I loved this simple and easy transformation it gave just by adding a plant to my bathroom. I put it in a seagrass basket and voila…my all white bathroom was instantly refreshed.
- Pillows or a new Throw: I am always on the hunt for new throws and pillows to help refresh any space in your home. When the seasons change, I change the throws through out my house. I have some that are more summery and light and then some that are heavier (think faux fur or cable knit) that are great for fall and winter. I mix and match colors and textures to give my space a refreshed feel without breaking the bank. Same could be said for new pillows. And you don’t have to buy new pillows unless you want to. I like to move pillows around my house constantly. I also play around with the pillow combinations/groupings. For example, I will have 2 of the same pillows at opposite ends of the couch and then add an unexpected pop of color or pattern with 1 additional pillow added to the pair of matching pillows. Don’t feel like once you buy pillows they have to stay in the same place…I rotate them around my entryway bench, my bed, my sofas, and in my kitchen. I have them EVERYWHERE for pattern and color. I also added these pillows to my laundry room for even more color and pattern.
- Wallpaper: Ok, I know this is a big commitment, but it will 100% most definitely instantly refresh any area in your home. Wallpaper is not what it once was in the 80’s and 90’s. You can really achieve any look no matter how simple or ornate you like with the help of wallpaper. I went bold and chose this blue shibori wallpaper for our utility room. Milton & King has a great selection, it was hard to choose for sure. I am a sucker for blue so I went ALL in with the blue shibori wallpaperand added even MORE blue to the space! The cabinets were already painted Sherwin Williams Bracing Blue and then with the new wallpaper, it makes a dramatic statement. I would have LOVED to have used this wallpaper at our new lake house, but when I had this installed, we weren’t building yet and I didn’t know that we were going to be. I love the pattern and it looks so good paired with the brass accents I have around the room like these brass matted frames and this brass mirror.. If pattern scares you, I would definelty suggest starting small with just an accent wall or a powder bathroom. We have a very neutral seagrass wallpaper in our powder bathroom and it’s very simple and elegant. I also love wallpaper in a nursery or kids’ room. I hired a local wallpaper installer who did a great job and worked around my cabinetry. I have heard wallpapering is pretty simple these days, but I am not much of a DIY girl. Ha!
I hope these ideas and tips I have shared today help give you the knowledge so that you can instantly refresh any space in your home. Sometimes decor can get stale and boring and it doesn’t have to! Just by adding one, some or all of these ideas, your home can have a totally refreshed feel.
