Hello everyone! This year and summer really flew by in our household! I’m a little sad that all my sidekicks are back in school but that’s left me time to share my tips on how to decorate for fall in your living room! I know that I’ve talked about one of my favorite home décor stores before and I must again because I couldn’t decorate my house for fall or any other season without At Home!
At Home is one of those stores where I can literally spend hours perusing the aisles and aisles of home decor. With over 50,000 affordable home decor must-haves for all styles and spaces, they truly have something for everyone.
To give my living room all the autumn vibes, I went for a neutral theme with a variety of adorable pumpkins and lots of faux eucaulutpus and more …all from At Home. Fall is by far my fave season to decorate for because I am just a sucker for ALLLL the pumpkins and that cozy feel it brings to your space.
Just give me a PSL (Pumklin spice latte) along with my home decked out for fall, and I am such a happy girl! The neutral fall color scheme will not compete with existing living room decor and is just the vibe I am going for. Let’s get started on my 8 tips on How to Decorate for Fall in your living room…
How to Decorate for Fall in your Living Room
First, I always like to clear the space I’m styling.
By taking out all of my existing decor, it helps me get a feel for the space and start getting ideas on what I am going to put where for the new season. This also helps with overcrowding any area. My recommendation is to start clearing out décor 1 day then go back the next day and take a look at your blank canvas. By doing so, it helps minimize clutter. I also am a little OCD on cleaning, so I like to dust with my swiffer on all cleared spaces while they are empty. Ha!
Gather all fall décor and lay out in a common area to get those creative juices flowing!
(I used my garage floor so I could lay out everything from At Home and not get a mess on my living room floor). While shopping at At Home, I pulled everything I was loving from the same color family…think soft whites, greens and a hint of orange. I was also loving the touch of antlers, mercury glass and all the eucalyptus I was able to find in store! Little tip: To keep my seasons organized, I always use clear totes with lids. By sorting with totes, it helps keep track of all my décor and makes for easy storage. I always label my totes as well and we keep them in the attic after the season is over.
Start with the main focal part of your living room and make a game plan!
In my house and most homes these days, the main focal point is the fireplace/mantle. I wanted to REALLY make an impact with my mantle and hearth, so I allocated a large amount of fall decor to this area and just started playing around with ideas. I placed faux eucalyptus stems on the mantle and a little near the hearth to add some greenery and texture. On the mantle, I then placed different sizes of white pumpkins to add dimension.
White pumpkins, glass pumpkins, and baskets.
To tie in the pumpkin theme, I placed the cutest black and white pumpkin sign in the middle of the mantle (this sign also worked perfectly to hide my husband’s speaker he leaves on our mantle at all times). At the end of my mantle on both sides, I found perfect glass hurricanes with greenery attached and placed a white candle in each. Around the hearth, I added glass pumpkins and a great basket I found at At Home along with some autumn greenery in a giant white vase from At Home. I like the staggering heights on the hearth so it keeps things interesting. On the top of the mantle, I kept things very symmetrical.
Add in fall decor to unexpected areas.
I chose to decorate the windows that hug our fireplace to further make a statement around my mantle area. As window décor, I hung a wreath in each window. I LOVE using my windows as another place to hang decor!Since I was hanging a wreath, I used Command damage free hooks. Easy to put on and take off! The wreaths I used were soooo pretty and had the perfect fall look I was going for..they have faux antlers in the wreath and that totally sealed the deal for me!
Add in seasonal decor that complements your existing decor.
On my large console table in my loving room, I kept my existing artwork there. I kept my glass lamp on the end of the table for height and added my own gilded antler. I found the prettiest fall floral arrangement from At Home (how cute is the vase it came in) and added it in with my glass candlesticks. On the bottom of my console, I added groupings of a variety of pumpkins. You can never have enough pumpkins is always my fall motto! I had my gold bowl and filled it with the textured mini filler pumpkins I found from At Home. Then on the other side is a cozy throw pillow and more neutral yet chic pumpkins from At Home. Across the living room, I have a small conversation area. I added some At Home greenery and a small assortment of pumpkins. I kept my pillows there but added in a cozy faux fur throw that I bring out every year for fall and winter.
Another fall decorating tip would be to mix sizes/materials of any pumpkins you’re using.
Unless you are going for a perfectly symmetrical look, like I did on my mantle. If I were using brighter fall tones like rich reds and oranges, I would still add in a variety of shapes, colors and textures. By having differing sizes and textures of pumpkins on the surrounding areas, it keeps things from being too uniform! I love mercury glass pumpkins for a little glam. But then I kept everything else fairly simple with whites, greens, woods, and etc.
Don’t forget to add in fall greenery throughout the living room.
Every season calls for texture and you can achieve that with the help of greenery. I used eucalyptus greenery as a base for some areas that I placed pumpkins on. I also found some great fall floral stems from At Home that I placed in vases. Every vignette needs some greenery tucked in, just make sure it is season appropriate.
Finally, remember fall is all about cozy, so bring out all the faux fur throws, pillows and heavier fabrics. I used a variety of furry throws, cableknit pillows, and poufs all over the living room. Light a candle and enjoy! If my kids are willing to cuddle up and take a nap with me this fall, we will be prepared!
