Once the weather starts getting warm, dresses are one of the most frequently worn items in my closet. I love how easy they are to style (they’re basically a no-brainer when putting together an outfit), keep you cool on even the hottest days, and let’s face it – no matter how stretchy your shorts are, they’ll never be as comfy as a dress.
When it comes to dress styles, my all-time favorite is a maxi dress. There is truly no easier way to look chic but stay cool during the hot summer months. And thanks to how versatile they are, you no longer have to buy a new dress for every event and occasion.
Since maxi dresses are my go-to in the summer months, I figured it would be fun to show you my favorite way to style the maxi dresses in my closet. Hopefully, these tips will help make getting ready for the day a little easier. Especially when it’s hot out.

How to Style a Maxi Dress
Add Accessories
There’s no denying that the hotter it gets outside, the easier my outfits get. Since maxi dresses are a one-and-done kind of outfit, I love adding in a fun accessory like a hat, straw bag, sunglasses, or statement earrings to help complete the look. If you’re someone that’s been wanting to try out a new trend or two but want to start small, this is also a great time to give those a try. Maybe it’s a cool pair of sandals, a fun hat, or even a bandana, give it a try with your maxi dress!
Add a Belt
While this might fall under the accessory category, adding a belt when styling a maxi dress will give you more shape especially if you’re wearing a flowy dress. The size and style of the belt can really vary, I find that the best options are a small braided leather belt or a thicker more stand-out style. Both help create a more flattering shape!
An Easy Jacket
I am such a sucker for a denim jacket and pairing one with a maxi dress is one of my favorite looks for summer. When looking for a denim jacket to pair with your dresses, I always recommend opting for one that is shorter in length so that it hits at your natural waist and doesn’t look messy. Plus, if it gets too warm, you can take it off and tie it around your waist! Another easy way to create a flattering shape.
If denim jackets aren’t your thing, you could also pair your maxi dress with a sleek blazer or leather jacket. These two are definitely better for early spring/fall but if you live in a cooler climate, they’re a great option even in the summer months!
Keep Your Footwear in Mind
The best style shoe to pair with a maxi dress (in my opinion, at least!) are an easy sandal. I usually go for something strappy and fun, especially because during summer! If your dress is on the longer side or you have an event you’re attending, pair your dress with a heeled sandal for a little extra height.
